This Al Jazeera news segment (02:50) looks at “Watz With Bashir,” an award- winning animated Israeli documentary about the Sabra and Shatila massacres during the First Lebanon War in 1982. The documentary takes place in 2006, following an IDF soldier as he struggles to uncover his repressed memories from the war and his own indirect involvement in the massacres that left thousands dead. The creation of this film by an Israeli and its support by the Israeli government points to the strength of Israel’s democracy and moral conscience, also reflected by the massive protests by the Israeli public which followed the massacres in 1982.
