Hear Israeli-American mathematician Robert Aumann speak about the contribution that earned him and Thomas Schelling 2005’s Nobel Prize in Economics in this clip (2:41) from the official YouTube channel of the State of Israel. German-born and American-raised Aumann joined the Mathematics faculty at Hebrew University in 1956 and to this day, Hebrew University is the institution he is most commonly associated with. In a nutshell, Aumann developed an understanding of how common gaming principles—like anticipating your opponent’s move in a game of chess—apply to large-scale and even global interactions in the realms of economics, politics, science, and more. His prize was earned “for having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis,” according the the official Nobel Prize organization.
