This song by Israeli alternative rock band, Girafot, is a tribute to Dapni Leef, one of the leaders of the 2011 social justice protests and the first to pitch her tent on Rothschild Blvd in Tel Aviv. The lyrics, loosely translated below, show how she unexpectedly became the face of an enormous movement, when all she wanted was to be able to afford her daily life. Her small action sparked the biggest social protest movement in Israeli history, with hundreds of thousands demonstrating against the high cost of living in Israel. For the Hebrew lyrics, click here.
Daphni, Daphni
She doesn’t know what happened to her
She simply fell into it
Everything got complicated
Everything got dirty
She just discovered that which was in her heart
Which was heavy
Shaking all day
Her name is Daphni, Daphni
Left, right, left, right, left
She doesn’t know what happened to her
She got the point
The street called to her
Everything went awry
The nation got excited
She just wanted
A bit of ceiling
To keep her head dry
When the fire would go out
Her name is Daphni, Daphni
Left, right, left, right, left
She doesn’t know what she fell into
