This post presents the Hebrew text of a Kiddush ceremony written for Yom Ha’atzmaut by Zayit, an organization that runs programs about Jewish identity and culture in the Emek Hefer region of Israel. The Kiddush expresses gratitude for the opportunity to live a Jewish life with political independence and sovereignty in the Land of Israel. Although it is not customary to perform Kiddush on Yom H’aatzmaut, and it is not officially considered a religious holiday in Jewish law where one is obligated to perform Kiddush, some have taken on this custom in order to express the uniqueness of the day in a meaningful way. This particular version combines biblical quotes and traditional blessings with contemporary language.
Zayit’s Yom Ha’atzmaut Kiddush
“יָשֵם מְִדבָּר לַאֲגַם מַיִם וְאֶֶרץ צִיָּה לְמֹצָאֵי מָיִם: וַּיֹושֶב שָם ְרעֵבִים וַיְכֹונְנּו
עִיר מֹושָב: וַיִּזְְרעּו שָדֹות וַיִּטְּעּו כְָרמִים וַיַּעֲׂשּו פְִּרי תְבּואָה: תהילים קז
ּובְעֶֶרב שַבָּת בֵּין הַשְּ מָשות ה’ בְּאִיַיר תש”ח, ָקמּו ָראשֵי עַמֵנּו וְגַם נִצְּבּו וְָקְראּו לְעַצְמָאּות
עַמָם ּולְשִחְרּור מולְָדתָם וְכֹונְנּו אֶת מְדינַת יִשְָראֵל צְמִיחַת גְאּולָתֵינו מִגָלּות ּוְרִדיפות.
אַז נִמְלָא שְחוק פִּינּו ּולְשֹונְנּו ִרינָה, הָיִינּו שְמֵחִים.
וְנוֶדה עַל הָאֶָרץ הַטובָה אֲשֶר בָּחַר לָנּו בְּאַהֲבָה, בָּּה הֵַקמְנּו אֶת מְִדינָתנּו כְּכֹל הַעַמִים.
