Created by the TALI Education Fund, this educational resource introduces first and second grade Israeli students to the value and structure of the Torah for the first time. The book is based on the view that the Torah always has been and will be an essential element of Jewish culture and tradition that can enrich our lives as a nation and as individuals. The main section of the program introduces the students to the Torah for the first time, answering basic questions such as what is the Torah, what does it look like, why is it important to us, how does it relate to our lives today. The second section helps students get oriented within the Five Books of Moses, including an explanation of the text’s division into portions, chapters and verses and an introduction to the unique language of the Torah. The final unit presents suggestions for a meaningful “Receiving of the Torah” ceremony for the students. The program includes a workbook for students, a teachers’ guide, and a set of 20 colorful posters to hang in the classroom. To view some sample posters and accompanying resources, click here. TALI, a Hebrew acronym for “Enriched Jewish Studies,” provides a pluralistic Jewish Studies program focused on Jewish heritage and identity to more than 12% of all secular public schools in Israel.
